Hogs Mixed on Tuesday

At the close for the Tuesday session, lean hogs were mixed within 15 cents of UNCH, save for a 52 cent gain in May. USDA’s National Average Base Hog price was up another $1.01 cents this afternoon to $101.55. The CME Lean Hog Index was up another 52 cents to $101.89 on 4/9.

China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs confirmed another ASF outbreak in a report to the U.S. embassy. The outbreak occurred April 8 in Hunan province, in which 3 pigs in a group of 61 were found with ASF. All 3 of the infected succumbed to the disease and the other 58 were culled. Illegal live hog transportation was cited as the cause.

Pork cutout futures were mixed, with gains of 32 to 50 cents and losses of 5 to 22 cents. USDA’s National Pork Carcass Cutout Value was up a sharp $2.39 in the AM report to $112.49. USDA estimated the federally inspected hog slaughter for Tuesday at 476,000 head, leaving the week’s total at 964,000 head.
